Tackling Asbestos in Industrial Buildings

Asbestos can be a major issue in many older industrial facilities, and this is something that the Inspire team can help with. An excellent example can be seen in this warehouse project in Aberdeen, where the building was in urgent need of refurbishment due to water penetration and general breakdown/deterioration of the sheets.

The entirety of the works was undertaken whilst the store remained in operation, so it was imperative that strict health and safety measures were adopted to reduce the impact upon staff and customers. All relevant documentation including the Construction Phase Plan & Asbestos Plan of Works was issued to the client during the site mobilisation period.

The warehouse was split into two distinct areas by installing a timber dividing wall secured in polythene sheeting from floor to ceiling height. This ensured that the branch were able to move stock and continue daily operations on one side whilst roofing removal works safely took place on the adjacent side. All works were undertaken in accordance with HSE guidelines.

The existing asbestos roof sheets and wall panels were carefully stripped and disposed of into asbestos enclosed skips. These were then replaced with fully insulated Quadcore composite sheets from Kingspan Insulated Panels UK & Ireland. Asbestos Air Monitoring Tests were carried out during every week of the project to ensure a safe working environment was maintained.

Elsewhere we replaced and upgraded the existing rooflights with new Kingspan GRP triple skin factory assembled units. Rainwater goods and internal soffit liners were modernised whilst the existing valley and boundary gutters were replaced with an insulated gutter lining system from WeatherFAST Ltd.

Regular meeting were held between the Client and Inspire’s Project Management Team to ensure that the project was ran smoothly and safely. Following the successful completion of the roofing and cladding refurbishment works, the building was handed back over to the client within the agreed timescale, much to their delight!
