Strip of Existing Roof Covering, Installation of New BUFR Roofing System & Associated Works

BACKGROUND

Inspire Contract Services were appointed as Principal Contractor for a comprehensive roof refurbishment project at Ravens Wood School in Bromley. The £553,000 scheme began during the summer holidays of 2024 and was delivered over a 22-week programme, ensuring minimal disruption to the school’s day-to-day operations.

The core scope of works involved the removal of the existing felt roof coverings, which had reached the end of their serviceable life, followed by the installation of a new high-performance Alumasc felt waterproofing system. The new system was selected for its proven durability and weather resistance, extending the longevity of the roof and improving the building’s overall performance.

In addition to the roof upgrade, external gutters and downpipes were replaced across the site with new cast iron equivalents. This provided significant improvements to the building’s rainwater management system, supporting the longevity of the new roof coverings and preventing future water ingress issues.

To accommodate the new insulation build-up within the roof structure, several low-level windows were removed and replaced with new UPVC units. Internal finishes were made good following this work, ensuring a clean and professional result both inside and out.

THE WORKS

This project called for the existing roof to be stripped and replaced with a new Alumasc BUFR Roofing System. Works took place as follows:

  • Existing felt roof coverings removed and responsibly disposed of.
  • A new Alumasc BUFR System was then installed.
  • External gutters and downpipes were replaced across the building with new cast iron rainwater goods.
  • Low-level windows to small corridor roof were replaced with new Upvc windows.
  • New cable trays were installed to support services.

THE RESULT

Acting as Principal Contractor, Inspire Contract Services managed every aspect of this project – from scaffolding and site set-up through to full installation and health & safety compliance.

Beyond the extensive roofing works and the replacement of existing rainwater goods, new cable trays were also installed across various roof zones, This helped to improve future serviceability and allowing for easier routing of mechanical and electrical systems.

Health and Safety standards needed to be impeccable at all times due to the sensitive nature of the site in which we were working. As some of the works were carried out in a live school environment, careful sequencing and planning were essential. Much of the disruptive activity was scheduled during school holidays, and Inspire worked closely with the school’s leadership team to ensure the continued safety of pupils and staff throughout the programme.

Despite the logistical challenges of working in an occupied educational setting, the project was delivered on time and within budget, to a high standard of workmanship.

The Ravens Wood School scheme highlights Inspire’s ability to deliver complex roofing and associated works in sensitive, live environment, demonstrating both technical capability and a collaborative, solutions-led approach.
