BACKGROUND
Peel Ports London Medway is a major port complex in southeast England, handling diverse cargo such as containers, vehicles, and timber. Strategically located near London, it supports logistics, shipping, and regional economic growth with multimodal connectivity.
In 2019 Inspire Contract Services Ltd were invited to tender for the roof refurbishment of the W2 building comprising roof areas A, B, C, and D. The building was suffering from extensive leaks throughout thus causing damage to the large reels of paper stored within the warehouse areas.
A detailed survey by the client was undertaken and a project brief and specification was subsequently issued. Following a successful tender and detailed selection process, Inspire Contract Services were then successfully awarded this contract.
The various roofs on the facility comprised pitched profile metal roofs, with the original covering being on a lattice column and trussed roof construction. The three adjoining structures had conventional steel portal frames spanning North to South. All buildings were covered in single skin profiled sheet with approximately 10% rooflights. The general condition of all roofs and associated gutters was poor with substantial leaks being experienced and general deterioration of the rooflights.
THE WORKS
This project involved the replacement of the existing roof covering with a new profiled metal cladding. Works took place as follows.
Works included:
- Replacement of four pitched roofs with new TATA D46 profile system and replacment of existing rooflights
- Installation of new flashings and jack roof structure
- Cleaning and refurbishment of all gutters with a liquid waterproof coating
- Provision of full perimeter access scaffolding plus installation of safety netting to facilitate the roofing works
- Transportation of materials using a versatile, hybrid telehandler forklift.
THE RESULT
The project was originally planned to be an over-roof proposal incorporating refurbishment to gutters. Following further surveys of the roof sheeting using a drone survey along with a roof visual survey it was deemed more suitable to strip and re-sheet the existing roof coverings. The sheet proposed for the new covering was a TATA D46 profile, this was designed and chosen to cater for the unusually wide purlin spans within the various roofs.
The works were undertaken during the general occupancy of the buildings meaning that it was imperative all works were conducted in accordance with all health and safety requirements to ensure the Ports daily operations were maintained.
During the lead-in period, a detailed programme of works was prepared and agreed with the client. This was used throughout the project to ensure the works did not affect the day to day running of the Port.
All Health & Safety documentation including the Construction Phase Plan was issued to the client during the site mobilisation period to ensure all safety measures were in place. Detailed quality and safety assurance plans were put in place throughout the project with regular on site checks carried out by both the manufacturer and the Client.
Despite the challenging environment, all works were completed to an extremely high standard. Following the successful delivery of this project, Inspire Contract Services were subsequently awarded further major refurbishment works at this important coastal facility.
